O&R Electricity Rates Going Up, Again

Hold on to your checkbooks! Electricity in the Hudson Valley is going to be getting more expensive, again.

The New York Public Services Commission (NYPSC) just quietly approved another rate increase for Orange and Rockland customers. Your electricity costs will increase 2.4% this year. Then another 2.5% next year. Then another 2.5% in 2021. That's a total of 7.4% over the next three years.

I received a notice with my electric bill in the mail which contained the same information as this Orange and Rockland press release.

There was a little burst of news stories about this rate hike when O&R first made the proposal, then nothing. I made a detailed search of the Internet last night looking for news stories about this significant rate hike, and could not find anything. Nada, zip, zilch. I kept running into O&R websites which are obviously confusing on purpose. There were no straight "news" stories or publications I could find. As far as I can tell not one of the normal "news outlets" covered this significant rate increase, impacting hundreds of thousands of O&R customers. If you spot one, please send me an email.

Did you know O&R's rates increased by 93% from 1997 to 2017? With this new increase the cost of electricity from O&R will have more than doubled in the past 20 years. What do you think is going to happen over the next 20 years? Their rates will probably double again. Quietly. Slowly. So you won't even notice. You know, like the frog in the pot of water where the heat is slowly turned up? They are the heat, you're the frog. Ribbet...

You can hop out of the pot and avoid all of these charges by going solar. You basically use the money you would have been sending to O&R to pay for your solar panels. But instead of just paying your bill and getting a pile of receipts, your money is being used to actually buy something tangible, with real value. If you do nothing, then nothing will change. You have to take positive action to break free from the utility company.

Qualifications: In order to go solar first you have to qualify:

  • Do you own your own home? You can't put solar panels on a house you rent.
  • Do you have good credit? You need a 640 FICO score to lease or a 650 FICO score for a loan.
  • Is your roof shaded? You can't be living under huge trees casting shade on your roof, especially on the South side of the house.

Give Me A Call: If you have any questions feel free to give me a call at (845) 800-6925. You can also send a text or email to I will be happy to sit down with you to answer all of your questions regarding solar energy. The bottom line is - practically everyone can save money by going solar. Act soon, because the 30% Federal Solar Tax Incentive is going away.
